FAQ | Unusually High Ping

Frequently Asked Questions: High Ping

High ping can be caused by a number of factors, both on your end and on the server side. Here are some potential causes:

  1. Your internet connection: If your internet connection is slow or unreliable, it can cause high ping. Try running a speed test to see what your download and upload speeds are.
  2. Your router or modem: If your router or modem is old or outdated, it can also cause high ping. Try updating the firmware or replacing the device.
  3. Your network settings: If your network settings are incorrect, it can also cause high ping. Check your firewall settings and make sure that BendingNations is not blocked.
  4. Your computer: If your computer is old or outdated, it can also cause high ping. Make sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements for BendingNations.
  5. The server: If the BendingNations server is overloaded or experiencing technical difficulties, it can also cause high ping.

How to Fix High Ping

If you are experiencing high ping, here are some things you can try:

  1. Close any unnecessary programs: When you are playing BendingNations, close any unnecessary programs that are running in the background. These programs can use up bandwidth and resources, which can contribute to high ping.
  2. Restart your router or modem: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix connection problems.
  3. Use a wired connection: If you are currently using a wireless connection, try using a wired connection instead. Wired connections are more reliable and can provide lower ping.
  4. Use a VPN: A VPN can help to improve your connection by routing your traffic through a different server. This can help to bypass any congestion or routing issues that may be causing high ping.

Diagnosing Connection Issues

If you have tried all of the above and you are still experiencing high ping, you can try using a diagnostic tool such as WinMTR. WinMTR can help you to identify the source of the problem by tracking the route that your data takes to the BendingNations server.

To use WinMTR:

  1. Download and install WinMTR.
  2. Open WinMTR and enter the IP address of the BendingNations server in the Host field.
  3. Click Start and let WinMTR run for at least a minute.
  4. Take a screenshot of the results and create a ticket on the BendingNations Discord server.

The results of the WinMTR test will show you the ping times and packet loss for each hop along the route to the BendingNations server. If there is a lot of packet loss or high ping times for any of the hops, this indicates that the problem is located on that hop.

Recommendations

If you are still experiencing high ping after trying all of the above, we recommend that you contact your internet service provider for assistance. They may be able to help you to identify and fix the problem.

We also recommend that you try using a VPN such as CloudFlare Warp. CloudFlare Warp is a free VPN that can help to improve your connection by routing your traffic through a different server. This can help to bypass any congestion or routing issues that may be causing high ping.

Installing CloudFlare Warp

  1. Go to Cloudflare Warp
  2. Click on the device you're using
    1. The webpage of Cloudflare Warp as of 2023
  3. Once installed you should click on the System Tray, you should then see an gray cloud. Click on that and you'll see this image. Click the slider so that it is enabled.
    1. Cloudflare Warp enable/disable screen
  4. Join BendingNations and check whether your connection is better. If it is then you're done. After some time you may not have high ping and will be fine to join without the VPN.
